My art begins with line. I have drawn since I can remember, mostly in pencil, and later in ink when I was relatively spillproof.
All my later work has this representational origin.
Color came next, although it was much later when
I began to appreciate how viscerally color affected me and to follow its emotional lead in my painting. Certain ranges of hue and tone seem to link back to childhood life experience or visual memories from the book illustrations of artists like Howard Pyle and Arthur Rackham. Color and its
ability to drive emotional response or create a tangible mood is basic to my work.
Bold design is my third major visual influence. My earlier career

graphics, focusing on packaging and brand identity. As a result, strong pattern
is an intergral part of my paintings.
The next influence will come when it does; mine is a work in progress. I currently
use oils, acrylic paints and watercolor as media, but I still go through a lot of pencils.
